MARIA KOUNKEL
Maria “Mickey” Kounkel, 86, of Monticello, Minnesota, formerly of Le Mars, Iowa, joined her husband Lloyd in heaven on Thursday June 6, 2002, at Monticello, Minnesota. Funeral services were held on June 10, at Trinity Lutheran Church rural Hinton, Iowa. Interment was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Maria Charlotte Sophie Muecke was born November 29, 1915, the daughter of Albert and Emma (Reimers) Muecke on the family farm near Hinton, Iowa. Maria was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton. She attended county school in Lincoln Township, rural Plymouth County. On May 3, 1938, Maria was united in marriage to Lloyd Kounkel at Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple had farmed in Stanton Township for many years. In the early 1970's Lloyd and Maria moved to Le Mars where she went to work at Westmar College. She worked at Westmar College until her retirement in 1980. Following the death of Lloyd, Maria has made her home in Minnesota near her son, Lawrence. Maria enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, playing the piano and playing cards. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church and had served as the organist for many years. She had also been a member of the Ladies Aid and Lamplighters. Survivors include her children, Lawrence and Mary Kounkel of Monticello, Minnesota; Kenneth and Sandi Kounkel of Canton, Ohio; and Kathleen and Daniel Carney of Altoona, Iowa; 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a sister Irmgard Luksan of Le Mars; a brother Kenneth Muecke of Hinton. Preceded her in death her parents, her husband Lloyd on June 14, 1996, 2 brothers Raymond Muecke in infancy and Bernard Muecke and a sister Elfrieda Schoenrock.
