FERN HARTMAN

Funeral services were held Thursday for Fern Hartman, 79, of Hinton and formerly of Kingsley, Iowa, who died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars. Burial was at Kingsley Cemetery.

Fern Hartman was born March 18, 1923, at rural Merrill, the daughter of Lyle and Alma (Tucker) Sturtevant. She grew up in the Merrill and Hinton area. She graduated from Hinton High School in 1941. On July she married Walter Hartman Jr. at Trimble Methodist Church in Sioux City. The couple farmed in the Plymouth County area for many years.

Fern loved gardening and had large vegetable garden every year. Canning vegetables and meat for her family and friends to eat was important to her. Fern also worked at the former St. Joseph’s Hospital (now Mercy Medical Center) in Sioux City. After retiring from the farm Fern and Walter moved to Hinton. She was a great wife and Mom, always ready to help wherever she could. She was a member of Melbourne United Methodist Church, Missionary and Garden Club. She raised hybrid iris and propagated African violets. She crocheted, sewed, cooked and loved all things of nature and spent many hours of each day outside.

Survivors include her husband Walter of Hinton; two daughters Ardyce Highley and her husband Terry of Independence, Missouri; and Janice Hansen and her husband Leonard of Kingsley; one son Roger Hartman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers and one sister. Preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one son Leland Hartman.
