PIONEER AKRON RESIDENT DIES IN CALIFORNIA

Mrs. Susan M. Hardy Was Member of Early Pioneer Family Here

The next to the last member of one of the earliest pioneer families of Akron vicinity, that of Duncan Ross, a daughter, Mrs. M. Hardy, died at Ontario, Calif., on Thursday, April 7, 1949, at the advanced age of 92 years, at the San Antonio Hospital.

The Duncan Ross family came to Akron from Owatonna, Minnestoa, in the early 1860's. The only surviving member of the immediate family is Robert Ross, of Akron, but there are many descendants of the family living in this vicinity.

Mrs. Hardy's husband, Chas. P. Hardy, was at one time a prominent citizen and business man of Akron. One of the streets of this town, Hardy, was named in his honor by its founder, E. W. Sargent. The following obituary of Mrs. Hardy was printed in an Ontario newspaper:

Susan M. Hardy, widow of Charles P. Hardy and one of Ontario's earliest poneers, died at 5:05 a.m. today at the age of 92 years.

A native of Owatonna, Minn., Mrs. Hardy had resided in Ontario for 61 years, having come here from Akron, Iowa, in 1888, just five years after the community was founded by geo. Chaffey.

Surviving the nonagenarian are a daughter, Miss Madge Hardy, and two sons, Everett B. Hardy and Robert R. Hardy, all of Ontario; a brother, Robert Ross, of Akron, Ia.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her husband died here in 1921.

Funeral services for the pioneer will be conducted Saturday, 10 a. m., at the J. B. Draper company chapel, 127 West C. Street, with the Rev. Donald W. Head, of Bethel Congregational Church, officiating. Interment will be in Bellevue Cemetery.
