OYENS, Iowa — Duane "Dewey" Weiler, 78, of Oyens died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at his residence.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Oyens, with the Rev. Randy Schon officiating. Burial will be in St. Catherine Catholic Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post 220, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328 and the Plymouth County Legion. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary at 8 p.m. said by the Catholic Order of Foresters and Oyens Columbus Club, all at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen, Iowa.

Mr. Weiler was born Oct. 20, 1919, in rural Remsen, the son of John and Rose Marie (Niehus) Weiler. He was raised in the Remsen area and attended St. Mary's School in Remsen. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1941 to 1946. He returned to the Oyens area, where he was employed at the Oyens Elevator.

He married Magdalen Gengler on June 19, 1946, in Oyens, where they made their home. In 1951, he began farming and the couple moved to a farm near Oyens in December 1952.

He was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, the church choir, a Eucharistic minister, Catholic Rural Life, the Catholic Order of Foresters in Remsen and the Oyens Columbus Club, and was the commander of the American Legion Post 220, a past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328, the Sergeant of Arms of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Legion Color Guard, the Plymouth County American Legion, the Last Man's Club of World War II Veterans, the Le Mars Golden Kernals Drum and Bugle Corps, the National Farmers Organization and the Floyd Valley Garden Club. He was also a past 4-H leader.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Connie and Steve Davis of Atlanta, Ga. and Elizabeth and Jim Gorczynski of Oyens; four sons and their wives, Cary and Jan of Escondido, Calif., Tony and Sharon of Winterset, Iowa, Mike and Ann of Olathe, Kan., and John and Laura of Urbandale, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Weiler of San Diego, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Stanley and Ernestine of Le Mars, Iowa, and Deacon Allan and Doris of Remsen; two sisters, LaVonne Hart of Le Mars and Ellen and her husband Richard Hatz of Remsen; and a brother-in-law, Robert Kellen of Remsen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Mary Ellen; a son, Philip John; a sister, Gail Marie Kellen; and twin brothers in infancy, Orlo and Ora.

Pallbearers will be Cary, Tony, Mike and John Weiler, Steve Davis and Jim Gorczynski.
