Charles John "Chuck" Swalley, the son of Jack and Emma (Marak) Swalley, was born in Sioux City on Jan. 26, 1925. He was raised by his grandparents, Peron and Tilley Swalley, in Westfield, Iowa, from the age of 1 1/2. Chuck graduated from Westfield High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1944 to 1946. He received the Bronze Star Medal for heroism in Germany. He was with the 69th Division, which met up with the Russians to end the war.
He was united in marriage to Audrey Milner on June 8, 1946, in Adaville, Iowa. In March 1949, they moved to Sanborn, where he worked for Getting farms for four years. He was then employed with the Associated Milk Producers for 35 years, retiring in 1988.
Chuck was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Sanborn, and served as an elder and trustee. He was a Boy Scout leader, umpired baseball, served as justice of the peace for 12 years, served on the Library board, City Planning and Zoning board in Sandborn, and the Sanborn Golf board. He especially loved to play baseball when he was younger, and in later years he enjoyed golfing. He loved his family with all of his heart and was so proud of each of them. A special joy was to watch his grandchildren participate in school and church activities.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Audrey of Sanborn; three sons, Mike and his wife, Leann of Sheldon, Iowa, Mark and his wife, Jana of Littleton, Colo., and Kevin of Grundy Center, Iowa; five grandchildren, Brad of Sheldon, Scott of Storm Lake, Iowa, Jeni and Bryan of Littleton, and Zachary of Grundy Center; a half sister, Luella Lowther of Moville, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Beverly Swalley of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.
Chuck was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; a brother, Perry; and two half brothers, Jim and John Cross.
