EMIL SLUYTER
Emil Sluyter, 83, of rural Hinton died Sunday, September 23, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital after becoming ill at his residence. Graveside services were held Wednesday in Memorial Park Cemetery Sioux City with military rites conducted by the Army Reserves. Services were at Larkin Northside Funeral Home in Sioux City. Mr. Sluyter was born February 9, 1918, in Tyndall, South Dakota, the son of William Sluyter and Albena (Horak) Peters. He moved with his family to Sioux City at the age of 2. He attended Sioux City schools. He had lived in Sioux City and the Sioux City area most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps from 1941 to 1945 attaining the rank of sergeant. He was stationed in Africa, Italy, Central Europe. He married Ester Lindermann on February 9, 1951, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sioux City. He retired as a foreman of a gas construction crew for Iowa Public service in December 1981 after 32 years of employment. He was of the Lutheran faith. He loved the outdoors and was proud of his yard. In the late 1940s and 1950s he played organized baseball. He also played in a golf league and belonged to the golf association. He also had a workshop in his garage. Survivors include his wife Esther of rural Hinton; a son Curt of Le Mars, Iowa; two daughters Karen and her husband Michael DeVancy of St. Louis, Missouri, and Janet Skogman of St. Paul, Minnesota; a grandson and his wife Chad and Robyn Skogman of St. Paul; a brother Roy Sluyter of South Sioux City; a sister and her husband Rose and Ralph Wright of Sioux City. He preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Steven Skogman.
