Mervin Henry Howe, 73, of Hotchkiss,Colorado, formerly of Hinton died Saturday, September 22, 2001, at a Colorado hospital following a brief illness. Services were held at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. Burial was in Kingsley Cemetery, Kingsley, Iowa. Mr. Howe was born July 12, 1928, in Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of Henry and Caroline (Muecke) Howe. He grew up in the Hinton area and attended Hinton schools. He married Thelma Pratt on August 15, 1948, in Sioux City. He had farmed in the Hinton area for 42 years from 1928 to 1970. He lived in Crawford, Colorado, from 1970 to 1976. He lived in Hotchkiss from 1976 to present. While living in Colorado he was a rancher. His wife died February 15, 1985, in Colorado. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Paonia, Colorado. He was a member of B.P.O.E. 1807 in Hotchkiss, Wilson-Head American Legion Post 97 of Paonia, and Moose Lodge in Mesa, Arizona, where they spent time during the winter. He enjoyed horses, raising cattle, playing pitch and pool. Survivors include his companion Barbara Olnhausen of Hotchkiss; two sons Tim of Dolores,Colorado ,and Barry and his wife Judy of Hotchkiss; two daughters and their husbands Penni and Douglas Walraven of Westminster, Colorado, and Rhonda and Clifford Muecke of Hinton; a brother Alvin of Hinton; a sister Bonnie Frerichs of Hinton; 4 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren. Along with his wife he preceded in death by his parents.
