Le Mars Native Buried in California

Rev. Ralph Obermire, 78, died Sept. 2, 1984, at Los Banos, Calif., following hospitalization for a stroke.

Funeral was Sept. 7 at St. Joseph church in Los Banos. Burial was in St. Peter cemetery, Fresno, Calif.

Father Obermire was born May 11, 1906, in Le Mars, the son of Ralph and Mary Ewin Obermire. He attended St. Joseph grade school and graduated from St. Joseph high school.

He studied at St. Lawrence College, Mt. Calvary, Wis., and took his philosophy and theology training at St. Anthony clericate, Marathon, Wis.

He was ordained a priest as a member of the Capuchin order June 17, 1934, at St. Mary church, Marathon, Wis., by Bishop Joseph Schinner.

His first assignments were in Milwaukee, Mt. Calvary, Garrison, New York, New York City and Appleton, Wis.

He was incardinated into the Diocese of Sioux City in March 1955. His first assignment was temporarily at Moville until 1956 when he was named assistant pastor of St. Lawrence parish, Carroll.

His first pastorate was at Struble St. Joseph from 1957 to 1959. He then served as pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Moorland from 1959-1966, followed by a pastorate at Ledyard Sacred Heart from 1966-1967.

He took a leave of absence for health reasons in August 1967 and moved to California. He officially retired from the active priesthood in September, 1970.

Father Obermire celebrated his 50th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood June 24, 1984, at St. Joseph church, Los Banos.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
