Darvin "Dar" Petersen, 81, of Le Mars, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at Park Place Estates in Le Mars.

Darvin Arthur Petersen was born Sept. 9, 1932, on the family farm south of Le Mars, to Arthur and Dorothea (Muecke) Petersen. Dar was confirmed and baptized at Grace Lutheran Church.

He received his education at the Union Consolidated School in Union Township.

Dar was united in marriage to Jane Bortles on Dec. 1, 1952, in Dakota City, Neb. They were blessed with four children: Roger, Carol, Connie, and Charlotte.

The couple farmed, milked cows and raised hogs on a farm near Hinton, before settling on a farm in Stanton Township. Along with farming and raising livestock, Dar had also worked for contactors Bill Neubrand and Roger DeYoung for several years.

Dar had also worked as an independent crop adjuster for nearly 30 years.

In the late 1990s, Dar and Jane moved to Merrill and in 2006 moved to Le Mars.

Dar was a lifetime member of Grace Lutheran Church and had served the church in numerous offices throughout the years. He had served on the building committee for the present church.

Dar and Jane enjoyed traveling and spending time at their vacation home in Branson, Mo., for several years.

He also enjoyed his rose garden, caring for his yard and making wood projects with his scroll saw.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Jane, of Le Mars; four children: Roger Petersen and his wife Rosie, of Le Mars, Carol Bunjes and her husband Jeff, of Alta, Connie Klohs and her husband Bill, of Le Mars, and Charlotte Langel and her husband Jeff, of Arnolds Park; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Melfred "Bud" Petersen and his wife Marlene, of Hinton; a sister-in-law, Alice Ross and her husband Bill, of Bronson, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Dorothea (Muecke) Petersen; a great-granddaughter, Avery Durst; a son-in-law, Ed Wagner; and his parents-in-law, Roy and Ida Bortles.

Funearl services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Tim Geitz officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Le Mars. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home, of Le Mars, with the family present to greet friends after 5 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons: Chris Klohs, Justin Petersen, Joshua Petersen, Wesley Bunjes, Jamie Petersen, Bradley Bunjes, and Kyle Petersen. Honorary casket bearers will be his granddaughters: Sherri Durst, Alyssa Wildeboer, Angela Penne, Sara Puetz, Jodi Sievers, Mindi Klohs, and Kelli Langel.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
