AKRON, Iowa -- Edward W. "Ed" Kiewel, 89, of Akron passed away Thursday, July 14, 2005, at his residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Carlsen Funeral Home-Schroeder Chapel in Akron, with the Rev. Dawn Quame of Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Edward William Kiewel was born July 19, 1915, in Granite Falls, Minn., the son of William and Alma (Day) Kiewel. In the early 1940s, he moved to Akron.

He met and married Lorraine Jammerthal on Nov. 19, 1943, in Dakota City. The couple farmed in the Akron area for many years. He later went to work as a hired hand for various farmers in the area. In 1980, the couple moved to town. For 10 years he was the grounds keeper for the Riverside Cemetery.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A.

Survivors include his wife of more than 61 years, Lorraine of Akron; four sons, Darrell Kiewel and his wife, Mary of Akron, Stanley Kiewel and his wife, Catherine of Lucerne Valley, Calif., Douglas Kiewel and his wife, Jeanne of Alvin, Texas, and Donald Kiewel of Brooksville, Fla.; a daughter, Sally Strong of Hawarden, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lawrence Kiewel of Alcester, S.D.; a sister, Kathryn Kranbeck of Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Roy, Douglas, James and Robert; two sisters, Betty White and Lila Tweet; a daughter-in-law, Darlene Kiewel; and a granddaughter, Robin Kiewel.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Smith, Emil Beeck, Dwain Willer, Jack Strong, Jim Utesch and Darold McKee.
