Note: His gravestone lists his name as William Rice Gardner with the years of birth and death 1826-1912

Mr. W. R. Gardner died on his old homestead northwest of town on Thursday night of last week, aged 76 years.

His death was caused by taking a dose of carbolic acid the day before from a bottle which he mistook to contain the medicine he was in the habit of taking as he had been in poor health for some time.

All efforts to save him from the effects of his terrible mistake proved useless and he died the following night after much suffering.

The funeral was held at the house Saturday afternoon conducted by Rev. P. E. Bartlett. It was largely attended as the deceased had been a resident in this community for more than twenty five years and much respected by all. The remains were laid to rest in the Akron cemetery beside those of his wife who preceded him to the Great Beyond scarcely three weeks before.

Two children survive. Mrs. B. Ogden and L. W. Gardner, both of this vicinity.
