HINTON, Iowa -- Maxine Beck, 90, of Hinton passed away Friday, July 14, 2006, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Hinton, with the Rev. David P. Kottlowski officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa.

Maxine Gladys Beck was born June 7, 1916, in Bloomfield, Neb., the daughter of Carl Edward and Ruth (Jones) Henkel. She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith. Early in her childhood, her family moved to Sioux City, where her father worked on the railroad, and lived in the Leeds area. She attended Leeds Elementary School and later Central High School.

She married Joseph H. "Joe" Beck on Aug. 20, 1935, in Spirit Lake, Iowa. The couple operated a corn shelling business and farmed in the Hinton area until moving to Lake Benton, Minn., in 1947 to farm there. In 1959, they returned to live in Hinton while she, her husband and sons created and operated an automotive interior business, Tri-B Trim Shop in Sioux City. They sold the business in 1975. Joe passed away Nov. 5, 1978, in Sioux City. After his passing, she worked with the new owners of the Trim Shop. She later worked at Stockberger's Hardware Store in Hinton until a stroke limited her ability to work.

She was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Aid. She was a longtime member of the Hinton Senior Citizens Club, where she had served as president for 20 consecutive years. High on her list of treasures was her years of square dancing. She was a member of the Spares and Pairs Square Dance Club in Sioux City. She also was a member of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed her keyboard organ and playing cards with her friends. Her favorite music artist was Alan Jackson. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her children, Darrell Beck and his wife, Sharon of Sioux City, Charles Beck of Hinton and JoAnn Christenson of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Rosemary Beck of Boulder, Colo.; two brothers, Leon Henkel of Whiting, Iowa, and Lyle Henkel and his wife, Joyce of Sioux City; two sisters, Doris Skinner of Santa Monica, Calif., and Lorraine Lethcoe of Kansas City, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Donald in infancy and Gene on Nov. 23, 1985; two brothers, Donald and Dale Henkel; and a sister, Helen Petersen.

Pallbearers will be Darren Beck, James Christenson, Jon Christenson, Shannon Smith, Dr. Nick Holton and Craig Gessler. Honorary pallbearers will be Jill Holton, Julie Gessler, Ramona Beck, Michelle Howard, Jeanette Beck, Kirstina Johnson and Emily Schott.
