Howard Held, 85, longtime Hinton cattleman died Monday, June 28, 1999, at Marian Health Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 1, 1999, at the Hinton United Methodist Church. Interment was in Graceland Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa. Howard Held was born July 2, 1913, on the family farm near Hinton, Iowa, to Benjamin and Viola (Croston) held. Howard grew up on the family farm, attended school in Hinton and graduated from Hinton High School. He attended Moringside College in Sioux City and Iowa State University in Ames and majored in animal husbandry. Howard was united in marriage to Evelyn Madsen on April 9, 1950, in Sioux City, Iowa. Howard farmed south of Hinton and was a purebred Angus breeder for almost 50 years. Howard was very active showing purebred Angus cattle all over the United States. He had shown livestock at the Clay County Fair for 50 continuous years and showed cattle at the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago from 1932 to 1964. Howard also enjoyed judging cattle at county fairs and state fairs across the region. Howard was a member of the Hinton United Methodist Church, American Angus Association Plymouth County Fair Bureau and past member of the Plymouth County Fair Board. Survivors include his wife Evelyn of Hinton, two sons, Richard of Hinton and Mark and his wife Kaye of Hinton, two grandchildren, Danica and Ben Held, a brother and sister-in-law Warren and Sherry Held of Cherokee, five sisters Carol Burr and her husband Richard of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Joyce Jensen of Indianola, Iowa, Roberta Hasek of Sac City, Iowa, Lois Field and her husband Howard of White Water, Wisconsin, Darlene Harris and her husband Dale of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Emma Talmadge and Hazel Hauff, two brothers Robert held and Duane Held in infancy.
