Richard "Dick" Hinken, 77, of Le Mars, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars, after a year long struggle with cancer.

Richard John Hinken was born on March 4, 1936, in Remsen, to Benjamin and Mary (Hamman) Hinken. Dick, as he was known to family and friends, attended and graduated from Le Mars Central High School. In January 1959, he was inducted into the United States Army. Upon completion of basic training, Dick was deployed to Germany. After his discharge from the service in December 1960, Dick returned to Le Mars and worked construction for the next 35 years.

Dick was united in marriage to Alice (Bruhn) Klein on May 19, 1984. He worked for Klein Leasing Co. until retiring in 1990.

Dick and Alice enjoyed spending several winters in Mesa, Ariz. Alice died Dec. 10, 2007.

Dick enjoyed going to coffee with friends at the Truck Stop and watching professional football games. He also enjoyed going golfing with friends.

He was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church, Wasmer American Legion Post #241 and Le Mars Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1381.

Survivors include a daughter, Karla Schwartz and her husband, Dean, of Le Mars and their children Tyler Schwartz and his wife, Rachel, of Wheaton, Ill., and Andrea Lundberg and her husband, Paul, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a son, Kyle Klein and his wife, Krista, of Le Mars and their children, Kristofer Klein, of Le Mars, Kenzi Klein, of East Hollywood, Calif., and Karson Klein, of Golden, Colo.; a brother, Ben Hinken and his wife Dora, of Bristol, R.I., special nieces and nephew, Chris Harms and her husband Gene, of Le Mars, Jeanne Neubeck and her husband Dave, of Hugo, Minn., and Don Miller and his wife Marlene, of Le Mars; along with many other nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Agnes Hinken, of Sheldon, Ruth Dietrich and her husband Paul, of Emmetsburg, and Janice Bruhn, of Fenton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice on Dec. 10, 2007; a granddaughter, Kelby Klein; his parents; two brothers, Ed and Larry Hinken and four sisters, Marion "Fritzie" Titus, Margaret "Sis" and Francis Longtin, Dorothy "Toodie" and Ralph Miller and Bonnie and Kenneth G. Baack; a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Hinken and a brother-in-law Bill Bruhn.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Tim Geitz officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars will be in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be after 4 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
