Gene Stinton, 63, of Le Mars, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, from injuries sustained in a truck accident near Centerville, S.D.

Gene Allan Stinton was born July 24, 1950, in Sioux City, to Lyle Vernon and Betty Francis (Steinfadt) Stinton. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran in Le Mars. Gene attended Le Mars Community High School.

He served his country in the U.S. Marines from December 1970 until his honorable discharge in January 1972. He continued as a Marine Reservist for the next several years.

Gene was united in marriage to Diane Kay Mitchell Sept. 7, 1974, at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. The couple made their home in Le Mars.

Gene spent most of his working years as a truck driver. Gene had worked for Farm Services, Terra Chemical, Russell's Ready Mix, MoorMan's, and for the last several years with Consolidated Nutrition (ADM). He enjoyed his profession.

Gene enjoyed the Saturday Morning Breakfast Club, checking crop progress, and watching western movies, particularly the old John Wayne movies.

His greatest joy in life was his family. He loved being "grandpa."

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Diane, of Le Mars; four children: Heather Stinton and Brent Hartman, of Le Mars and their children Bradley, Elizabeth, and William Hartman, Chris Stinton, of Le Mars, Hilary Bertram and her husband Mark, of Ireton and their son Carson, Haley Gengler and her husband Austin, of Pierson and children Quinton and Alivia; seven siblings: Michael (Patsy) Stinton, of Seney; Lynda Martin (Jay Smith), of Sioux City; Gloria Stinton, of Sioux City; Donna (Dave) Lariviere, of Bird Island, Minn.; Pam Baldwin, of Le Mars; Larry (Kerri) Stinton, of Le Mars, and David (Jenny) Stinton, of Le Mars; in-laws: Tom (Stella) Mitchell, of Orchard, Colo., Jacqueline (Roger) Bartlett, of Mission, Kan., Michelle (Randy) Jonas, of Cedar Rapids, Marcia Else, of Avondale, Ariz., and Lex Walker, of Le Mars; several aunts, uncles, and many nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle Vernon and Betty Francis (Steinfadt) Stinton; twin daughters, Rachael and Jennifer Stinton; a brother, Richard "Dick" Stinton; a sister, Brenda Stinton; and a nephew, Rich Martin.

A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. Paul Eisele officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be after 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Carlsen-Feuerstein Funeral Home of Le Mars with a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Stan Utesch, Bradley Hartman, Ethan Mitchell, Rodney Hodgson, Denny Anderson, Chris Anderson, Mark Hentges, and Jeff Kayser. Honorary casket bearers will be his grandchildren: Elizabeth Hartman, William Hartman, Carson Bertram, Quinton Gengler, and Alivia Gengler.
