Vera Ross, 95, of Akron, Iowa passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013 at the Akron Care Center in Akron.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 15, 2013 at the Westfield Congregational United Church of Christ in Westfield. Pastor Barry Miedema will officiate. Burial will follow in the Westfield Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2013 with the family present after 5:00 p.m., and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at the Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Vera Alice Michael was born December 11, 1917 on the family farm near Westfield, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Etti (Campbell) Michael. She was baptized and confirmed at the Westfield Congregational United Church of Christ. She attended school in Westfield and played on the basketball team. She graduated from Westfield High School in 1935.

She was united in marriage to Virgil Ross on March 21, 1938 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. They made their home in Westfield. Vera was a homemaker for her family. She also worked as a cook for the Westfield School and drove school bus for many years. Later, she and Virgil moved to Akron. Virgil passed away May 1, 2005 in Akron. Vera continued to live in Akron. In January of 2009, she became a resident of the Akron Care Center.

Vera was a lifelong member of the Westfield Congregational United Church of Christ; having been active in the ladies aide for many years and serving as a Sunday school teacher and on the church council. She was a member of “Tuesday Club” in Westfield for many years. She and Virgil enjoyed traveling and eating out. She also enjoyed watching sports, reading, and cooking. But most of all, she loved the times spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include a daughter: Alyce (Don) Dion of Westfield; a son: Thomas (Bethene) Ross of Akron; a daughter: Carolyn (James) Marienau of Ankeny, IA; a son: James (Barbara) Ross of Elk Point, SD; 9 grandchildren: Debra (Ned) Hauser of Akron, Melinda Dion of Akron, Tamara (Mark) Adams of Ankeny, Amy (Brian) Rollins of Akron, Teresa (Chad) Ross-Engel of Marshalltown, IA, Kimberly (Todd) Ross-Swancutt of Akron, Melanie Mortimer of Ankeny, James Jr (Wendy) Ross of Abilene, TX, and Danielle Dion of St. Petersburg, FL; 20 great grandchildren; her sisters: Margaret Mortensen of Alta, IA, and Gertrude Ferguson of Wichita Falls, TX; a sister in law: Elaine Michael of Akron; a brother in law: Claude Ross of Portland, OR; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil, a grandson Scott Ross, and a brother Robert Michael
