Vernon E. Lias
Vernon E. Lias, 76, of Westfield, died Sunday (April 28, 1985) in the Akron city hospital after a long illness.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Westfield Congregational church. The Rev. Walter Gowen officiated. Burial was in Riverside cemetery at Akron with military graveside services conducted by Hoschler Post 182, American Legion of Akron. Masonic services were conducted by Freedom Lodge 434 of Akron Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Schroeder funeral home in Akron. Shirley Banks, soloist, sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great ThouArt". Cheryl Banks was pianist.
Pallbearers were Norman Lias, Donald Lias, Chuck Lingle, Bob Lingle, Bill Michael and Jim Buryanek. Honorary bearers were Alfred Lingle, Ellis Lingle and Bud Lias.
Mr. Lias was born Sept. 17, 1908 in Warren township, Sanborn county, South Dakota, to Harry and Leone Lias. He married Helen M. Michael July 8, 1929, at Elk Point. He lived his entire life in the Westfield and Richland, S.D. area. He operated a service station for six years in Westfield and a gas truck for 30 years. He drove a school bus for Westfield Community school for several years and worked for the Town of Westfield for eight years. Mr. Lias was a past master of Freedom Masonic Lodge and 5th Degree team member of the Sioux City Consistory. He was a member of Abu Bekr Shrine Temple of Sioux City and the Big Sioux Shrine club of Akron. He was a World War II army veteran and was a member of Hoschler American Legion post 184, of Akron.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Harold of Lawton; one brother, Melvin of Sun City, Ariz.; one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.
