HINTON, Iowa | Sylvia Fischer, 69, of Hinton passed away surrounded by her family on Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at her home following a courageous battle with ALS.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton, with the Rev. Steven Stoll officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery at Sioux City, Iowa. Visitation will begin 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer–Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. There will also be one hour of visitation prior to the service Tuesday at the church. Expressions of sympathy may be directed through www.mauerjohnsonfh.com.

Sylvia Jean Fischer was born on Dec. 20, 1942 in Kingsley, Iowa, the daughter of Robert Lyle and Alma (Bashaw) Rawson. She attended school at Grand Meadow, graduating in 1960. She furthered her education by attending NBT business school in Sioux City, Iowa. After college, Sylvia took a position as a secretary and worked for a brief time in Milwaukee, Wis. She returned to Sioux City to work for Postal Finance.

On March 30, 1968, Sylvia and Ronald Fischer were united in marriage at Pierson, Iowa. They made their home in the Hinton, Iowa area. Along with raising her family, Sylvia worked at City Mouse, Country Mouse Preschool in Hinton and volunteered her spare time at the school library.

As an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Sylvia participated in Ladies’ Aid and served as its treasurer. She also belonged to Altar Guild, quilting circle and helped with vacation bible school. One of her most memorable moments was a mission trip where she and Ron traveled to Peru. She also enjoyed the time spent at their cabin in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Ron; a daughter, Kelley Fischer; a son, Kevin Fischer and his fiancee NaTausha, all of Hinton; a daughter and her husband, Katie and Ben Underberg of Sioux Falls, S.D.; grandchildren, Eliana, Alyssa, Gabriella, Erika and Talan (son of NaTausha); mother-in-law, Lydia Fischer of Hinton; her siblings, Dorothy Ann and Dale Nachazel of Bowie, Md., Jack Rawson and his special friend Kathy Kindig of Pierson, Iowa, Jerry Rawson and his fiancee Connie Junck of Kingsley, Mary Lou Rawson of Talent, Ore., Bonnie and Bob Frederickson of Pahrump, Nev., Roberta and Mike Feriancek of Prior Lake, Minn., and Margaret Rawson of Minneapolis, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law, William; brother-in-law, Dale; sister-in-law, Lorraine; and a nephew, Scott.

Memorials in Sylvia’s name may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or Hospice of Siouxland.
