Helen Johnson, 93, of Akron, Iowa passed away Saturday, November 24, 2012 at the Akron Care Center in Akron.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 29, 2012 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. Reverend Tanya Sherrill will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2012, with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.
Helen Juanita Ross was born August 10, 1919 in Merrill, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Gertrude (Thomas) Ross. She attended country school near Merrill and later high school in Westfield, Iowa. She graduated from Westfield High School. Following high school, she went to nursing school in Sioux City. She worked as a L.P.N. for the Akron Hospital in Akron.
She was united in marriage to Harold Johnson on June 7, 1941 at The Little Brown Church in the Vale near Nashua, Iowa. They lived on a farm near Westfield before moving to their farm north of Akron in 1946. When their daughter, Karen was born, Helen stayed home to raise their family. Harold passed away November 4, 2002. Helen continued to live on the farm.
Helen was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. She and Harold were charter members of the Akron Lions Club. Helen will be remembered for her artistic ability and creative ideas. She enjoyed making crafts of all types. She was a member of several craft groups through the years.
Survivors include her son: Ken (Barbara) Johnson of Albert Lea, MN; her brother: Claude Ross of McKinnville, OR; her daughter in law: Barb Johnson of Akron, IA; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; her daughter: Karen (Roy) Pike; her son: Paul Johnson; and her siblings: Virgil Ross, Loren Ross, and Cora Jans.
