REMSEN, Iowa | Matthew Conrad Gerrietts, 17, of Remsen passed away suddenly Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Remsen.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Thursday, with a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the church. Matthew was born on May 25, 1995, the son of Todd and Laurie (Vaske) Gerrietts. He was raised in Remsen, and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School, where he was a senior and on the football team and track. Matthew was a paper carrier for the Sioux City Journal, worked at Majeres Foodtown in Remsen, and also did detasseling every summer. He had just recently joined the U.S. Marine Corps.

Matthew was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was an altar server. He loved football, the Hawkeyes and the 49ers. He looked forward to being a Marine. He was president of the Stars and Stripes 4-H Club.

Survivors include his parents, Todd and Laurie Gerrietts of Remsen; his brothers and sisters, Josie, Elizabeth, Mindy, Adam, Jacob, Isaiah, Sam and Abraham; maternal grandparents, Al and Susie Vaske of Remsen; paternal grandmother, Betty Gerrietts of Le Mars, Iowa; aunts and uncles, Rick Vaske, Angie (Keith) Renken and Andy Vaske, all of Remsen, Joe Vaske of Houston, Texas, Mary Vaske and Tom (Katie) Vaske, all of Le Mars, Connnie (Franco) Taracena of Sioux City, Bonnie (Larry) Gardner of Hornick, Iowa, Sue Meier of Sioux Falls, S.D., Gary (Kim) Gerrietts of Le Mars, Lori (Bob) Hoefling of Marcus, Iowa; and numerous cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Lowell Gerrietts; an uncle, Terry Gerrietts; and a cousin, Alex Renken.

Pallbearers will be Blake Bartholomaus, Billy Bunjes, Scott Gardner, Josh Gerrietts, Jon Hoefling and Phillip Renken. Honorary pallbearers will be St. Mary’s Class of 2013 and St. Mary’s football team.
