SMITHLAND, Iowa | Robert E. "Bob" Jones, 76, of Smithland died unexpectedly Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, in Smithland.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oto, Iowa, with the Rev. Daniel Greving officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army and American Legion Leslie F. Seaton Post 0666. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a Scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m., at Root Funeral Home – Willman Chapel in Rodney, Iowa.

Robert E. "Bob" Jones, son of Ocy D. and Mae L. (McInnis) Jones, was born on Aug. 2, 1936, in Sioux City. Bob was reared in Westfield, Iowa, and then the family moved to Hubbard, Neb. He attended high school in Hubbard and during this time he enlisted with the U.S. Army. Bob served with the 82nd Airborne Division and was stationed in Augsburg, Germany, until being honorably discharged in 1958.

On Nov. 29, 1958, Bob was united in marriage to Angeline M. Uhl Rook in Sioux City. They made their home in rural Sioux City, then moved to Omaha, and later to Smithland. Bob worked at Container Corporation in Sioux City and then at the Sioux City Stockyards. For many years, he was self-employed as a trucker and operated a service station in Smithland until his retirement in 2011.

Bob enjoyed chickens, horses, collecting old farm machinery, restoring tractors, woodworking and going to stock car races. Most of all, he enjoyed his dogs as lifelong companions.

Bob is survived by his wife, Angie of Smithland; children, Starla Rook of Anthon, Iowa, Bill and wife, Jeannine Rook of Sloan, Iowa, Cheryl and husband, Ken Hessenius of Spencer, Iowa, Pam and husband, Robert Reed of Elk Point, S.D., Robert and wife, Linda Jones of Sergeant Bluff, Peggy and husband, Frank Bechtold of Mapleton, Iowa, and Patrick Jones of Seattle, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Shirley and husband, Don Banks of Westfield; one brother, Duane and wife, Donna Jones of Westfield; one sister-in-law, Lavonne Jones of Sioux City; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and many friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ocy Jones Jr.; son-in-law, Robert Kramer; and his faithful companion, Doc.
