Remsen Pioneer Died Tuesday. Gehrt Engelbrecht in His 94th Year.
Gehrt Engelbrecht, who had lived in the vicinity of Remsen for almost a half century, died Thursday, October 30, after a few days illness, at the advanced age of 93 years, 10 months and 5 days.
He was born on Christmas day, 1851, in Holstein, Germany, and came to this country with a brother in 1879, locating first in Wisconsin and living five years in Benton county before to Sioux county 1885, where he continued to work as a farm hand until 1891 when he married Amanda Wickhorst. The couple bought a farm in Meadow township several miles northeast of Remsen where they lived until Mrs. Engelbrecht’s death in 1920 when he moved to Remsen and made his home there until his death.
Mr. and Mrs. Engelbrecht were the parents of ten children who survive him, 21 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. The children are William of Sioux City; Mrs. Henry Rann of Remsen; John of Remsen; Mrs. George Krantz of Canistota, S.D.; Charles of San Diego, California; Herman of Remsen; Emil of Maurice; Alfred of Remsen; Mrs. Ed Wolf of Le Mars and Mrs. Phil Scallan of Minneapolis.
Funeral services at St. Paul’s church Friday were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Paul Wuebben and burial was in Remsen cemetery. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Nov 6, 1945, pages 1 and 4.
