Fred Schmidt, for many years a resident of Remsen, died shortly after seven o’clock on Monday morning, March 15th. His age was sixty years. Death was due to a stroke of apoplexy. Johann Friederich Schmidt was born on the twenty-first day of November, 18544 in the village of Lonsidedel, Wurtemburg, Germany, and for a number of years he worked there as a mason, being employed part of the time in a large factory. In the year 1880 he was united in marriage and remained at his trade in the old country until 1889 when the family came to the United States. They came direct to Remsen in 1889 and have lived here ever since. Mr. Schmidt engaged in the mason business at once and has made good during the time he spent here. He is recognized as one of the leading men of his trade in this vicinity and as a man is highly regarded. Besides his sorrowing wife, Mr. Schmidt leaves but two children, although five children were born to the union. Two of the children died while the family still resided in Germany and one, Miss Mollie, die in this country three years ago. The remaining children are Mrs. Frieda Letsche and Paul, residing near and in Remsen respectively. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon with services at 1 o’clock at the home and later at St. Paul’s church. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, March 23, 1915, page 2.
