Oyens tavern operator is found dead.
Mervin Watson Mongold, 66, Oyens tavern operator, was found dead at the tavern Sunday morning by an Oyens resident who had gone to the tavern to clean.
Funeral services will Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Fisch funeral home in Remsen with burial in the Remsen City cemetery.
Friends say his death was unexpected, although he had suffered from a respiratory ailment. He had been at the tavern during the day Saturday where he worked and had stopped in Saturday evening.
The say his apartment adjoins the Oyens tap and he was found in the bathroom.
Sheriff Ed Guntren said he was called to Oyens from church services at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
Mr. Mongold was born Oct. 26, 1909, at Re-Heights, S.D. He had operated a tavern in Remsen for several years and about eight years ago moved to Oyens. Where he since operated the Oyens tap.
He was known to his friends as Monk.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Gene (Patricia) Mead, Elk Point, S.D., and Mrs. B. J. (Barbara) Strong, Omaha.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who died two months ago in Sioux City. – Le Mars Daily Sentinel, May 17, 1976, page 1.
