Gerald DeStigter, 74, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars, Iowa.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Le Mars with Reverend Ken Vander Ploeg officiating. Interment will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning at the Sioux Center Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitations with the family present to greet friends will be after 5:00 p.m. Friday, September 23, 2011 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer Association or Hull Western Christian High School.

Casket bearers will be his grandsons: Jeremy Lamfers, Jordan Lamfers, Sean Van Berkum, Dillon Plantage and Drew Plantage. Honorary casket bearers will be his grand daughters: Cassandra Van Berkum, Amber De Stigter, Rachel De Stigter, Arianna De Stigter, and Sasha De Stigter.

Gerald Lee De Stigter was born September 3, 1937 in Sioux Center, Iowa to Tim and Margaret (Rehberg) De Stigter. Gerald attended Sioux Center Christian School and graduated from Western Christian High School in 1955. Following high school, Gerald attended the inaugural year of Dordt College in Sioux Center. He graduated with an associate’s degree in engineering. Gerald was united in marriage to Helen DeVries on September 26, 1959 in Edgerton, Minnesota. The couple lived in Sioux Center while Gerald worked for De Stigter Bro’s Construction building schools, churches and other large projects from 1955 to 1986. The family later moved to Escondido, California where Gerald worked for Visser Construction from 1986 to 1996, Whalen Electric from 1996 to 1999, and Redmon Electric 1999 to 2001. Gerald and Helen returned to Iowa and settled in Le Mars in 2004.

Gerald enjoyed fishing and singing with men’s chorus groups, church choirs, and barbershop quartets. His greatest joy in life was spending time with family.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Helen of Le Mars; 5 children: Lori Plantage and her husband Brent of Sioux City, Loren De Stigter of Sioux Center, Leah Lamfers and her husband Brian of Sioux Center, Byron De Stigter and his wife Vonda of Sandy, Utah, and Lyle De Stigter and his wife Robin of Oceanside, CA; 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; his siblings: Barbara Mantel of Sioux Center, Glen (Viola) De Stigter of Ankeny, Linda (Les) Anderson of Minneapolis, MN, Nancy Kienapfel of Ouray, CO, William (Dee) De Stigter of Carmel, IA, June (Dave) Glewwe of Carmel, IA, Tim (Julie) De Stigter of Aurelia, Ia, and Clarence (Margie) De Stigter of Sioux Falls, SD; several aunts and uncles: Leonard and Ella De Stigter of Sioux Center, Norman and Lucille Poele of Grand Rapids, MI, Cornelius and Penny De Stigter of Detroit, MI, Florence Calsbeek of Orange City, IA, Cecelia De Stigter of Escondido, CA, and Elaine De Stigter of Grand Rapids, MI and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
