Dorothy Coats, 83, of Le Mars passed away Sunday, September 18, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 26, 2011 at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars, Iowa with Reverend Tim Geitz officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitations with the family present will be from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 25, 2011 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitations will continue Monday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.carlsenfuneralhome.com. Memorials can be directed to Grace Lutheran Church or the Siouxland Humane Society.

Pallbearers will be Lee Carr, Jason Walls, Anthony Rucker, Leonard Van Otterloo Jr.,Harold Van Otterloo, Leon Franken, Loren Alons, Daryl Alons, Tom Franken, Zach Bales, and George Wilson. Honorary casket bearers will be Ashley Bales, Katie Walls, Morgan Overman, Karley Mariano, Ed Mariano, and Jay Luedtke.

Dorothy Jean was born May 21, 1928 to Henry and Gertrude (Cleveringa) Duistermars in Grand Rapids, Michigan. At the age of 14, the family moved to Sioux Center, Iowa then later to Orange City. She graduated from Orange City High School with the Class of 1945. The following year after high school, Dorothy was part of the Queens Court with annual Orange City Tulip Festival. Dorothy had always been very proud of her Dutch heritage. Dorothy was united in marriage to Donald D. Coats on June 18, 1952 in Orange City, Iowa. To this union 3 children were born: Deb, Denise, and Doug. She had lived in Ireton, Vermillion, and Le Mars since 1964. Dorothy was an Avon representative for over 30 years where she had been a longtime Presidents Club recipient. Dorothy loved to sing in the church choir, participate in church circle, and completing crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed her dogs and cats.

Her greatest priority in life was her family; always making her children came first. Dorothy moved to the Good Samaritan Village in December of 2008. Dorothy was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her 3 children: Deb Kloos of Le Mars, Denise Carr and her husband Lee of Flagstaff, AZ., and Doug Coats of Des Moines, IA; 5 grandchildren: Anthony (Shannon) Rucker of Kansas City, MO, Ashley (Zach) Bales of Sioux City, Katie (Jason) Walls of Gilbert, AZ, Morgan Overman of San Diego, CA, and Karley (Ed) Mariano of Palo Alto, CA; 4 great grandchildren; a sister, Henrietta Alons and her husband Dan of Hospers, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Gertrude (Cleveringa) Duistermars; 4 sisters, Catherine Lems, Ruth Wilson, Wilma Franken, and Ellien Duistermars; and a brother, Clarence Duistermars.
