Esther Von Hagel, 88, of Le Mars, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Society-Le Mars.

Esther Lauretta Von Hagel was born Feb. 8, 1923, in Le Mars, the daughter of Fred J. H. and Laura (Zink) Plueger. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Faith at Christ Lutheran Church (Grant Township), rural Le Mars. Esther attended rural schools in Grant Township, Plymouth County, Iowa and continued her education at Le Mars Central High School where she graduated with a degree in elementary teaching.

Esther taught in rural schools in Plymouth County prior to her marriage to John Von Hagel on June 16, 1946. The couple made their home on a farm in Plymouth County where together they farmed and raised their children. They retired from farming in 1979 and moved to Le Mars in 1984.

Esther was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church. She participated in women's organizations, sang in the church choir, quilting groups and served as an officer in the Western Iowa Synod Women's Conference.

Esther was also active in Grant Township Farm Bureau and volunteered with activities at Brentwood Good Samaritan Village.

Esther will be lovingly remembered by her son, Louis Von Hagel and his wife, Doris, of Le Mars; a daughter, Pearl Von Hagel of Le Mars; grandchildren Jessica (Stacy) Mortonson of Millbank, S.D., Melissa (Brian) Brakefield of Aberdeen, S.D., Jenifer (Antonio) Rodriguez of Manitowoc, Wis., Tiffany (special friend Jamie Von Hagel) Von Hagel of Le Mars, Jeremy (Special friend Mary) Von Hagel of Le Mars, and John (Julie) Donnelly of Sioux City; great-grandchildren Luis, Nasario, Ana, Corbith, Majessa, Jacinda, Anabelle, Wyatt, Elizabeth, Kyle, Megan, Preston, Hillary, Addison and Jonas; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John in 1994; a son, Randall in 2002; an infant granddaughter; and a sister Darlene Gronemeyer.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church (Grant Township), rural Le Mars. The Rev. Ben Worley will officiate. Burial will follow at Christ Lutheran Cemetery, rural Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 6-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the service Wednesday.
