Esther F. Oloff, 100, of Le Mars, formerly of Craig, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Society-Le Mars.
Esther F. Winterfeld was born July 29, 1911, on the family farm near Craig, the daughter of Albert and Meta (Schulz) Winterfeld. Esther was baptized and confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig. She attended country school near her home and graduated from Ireton High School.Esther continued her education by attending Normal Training classes in Sheldon. She then taught country school near Craig.
Esther was united in marriage to Elmer Oloff at her parents home June 25, 1931. Esther and Elmer were blessed with two children, Karen and Dean. Elmer died in February 1951.
Following Elmer's death, Esther was asked to return to teaching. She taught kindergarten through third grade at the Craig School. While teaching, Esther continued her education taking classes at Westmar College, graduating with a bachelor's degree in education in 1968. She continued teaching in Craig until the school closed in 1976 and she retired.
Esther moved from Craig to Le Mars in 1999, in 2004 to Park Place Estates, and to Good Samaritan Society in 2009.
Esther was a lifelong member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig where she had played the organ for more than 25 years, taught Sunday School, was a member of W.E.L.C.A., and had assisted with cleaning of the church for several years.
Esther enjoyed playing cards with friends, traveling with her children, writing poetry, and attending school events for her grandchildren.
Survivors include her children, Karen Klemme and her husband, Ralph, of Le Mars, and Dean Oloff and his wife, Linda, of Craig; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Kevin and LeAnne Klemme, and their children, Sadie and Andrew, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Russell and Cheri Klemme, Matthew and Michael, Marcus and Mallory, of Spencer; Kent and Wendy Klemme, Jacob and Colton of Ankeny; Cami Straw of Des Moines; Matthew and Lori Hofmeyer, Cole and Cade, of Urbandale; Ryan and Anne Oloff, Dylan, Trevor, Landon and Cohen of Le Mars, and Erin and Tanveer Singh of Waukee; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Meta (Schulz) Winterfeld; a brother, Alvin (Selina) Winterfeld; and a sister, Lucille (Arthur) Wilken.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig, with the Rev. Sarah Nye and Minister Joel Nye officiating. Interment will be at the church cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-8 p.m. today (Monday), at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Arrangements are with the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Klemme, Russell Klemme, Kent Klemme, Matthew Hofmeyer, Ryan Oloff, Tanveer Singh, Cami Straw, and Erin Singh.
Honorary pallbearers will be LeAnne Klemme, Cheri Klemme, Wendy Klemme, Lori Hofmeyer, Anne Oloff, Wayne Winterfeld, Eugene Winterfeld, and Merle Wilken.
