Funeral services for Richard Ball, age 76, were held Tuesday, November 7 at 1:30 p.m. at the Union Creek Lutheran Church, Rev. David Roy officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, graveside rites by Hoschler Legion Post of Akron.

Honorary pall bearers were: Clarence Andrews, Stanley Johnson, Alfred Kjose, Paul Erlchsen, Chris Wilken, Julius Wilken and Roy Ludwigs. Active bearers were: Herb Swanson, Melvin Andrews, Allen Berg, Max Vreugdenhil, Pete Van Beek and Eldean Oaks.

Mr. Ball died November 3 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

A prayer service was held Monday evening, November 6 at the Schroeder Funeral Home.

He was born December 28,1895 at Alcester, S.D., and was a lifelong Union County resident. He was a salesman for Moorman Feed Company for 25 years and a veteran of World War 1. On June 23, 1929 he married Harriett Kelly at Vermillion, S.D.

Survivors are his widow, sons Richard Jr. of Sacramento, Calif. James of Akron; daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Van Wyhe of Canton, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Harry and Julius, both of Akron; half-sisters, Miss Erma Busch and Miss Verga Busch, both of Akron, Mrs. Kenneth Ludwig of Alcester; half-brother, Adolph Busch of Vista, Calif..

Richard E. Ball departed this life Friday afternoon, November 3, 1972, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., following an illness of a few weeks duration. He was 76 years of age.

Richard Eric Ball was born at Alcester, S.D., December 28, 1895. He was baptized during infancy in the Peace Lutheran Church of Alcester with the service in the German language. When he was quite young his family moved from north of Alcester to south of Alcester. There he lived during childhood and youth. At a marriage service, June 23,1929, in the home of the United Brethren Pastor north of Vermillion, S.D., he was united in marriage with Miss Harriett Kelly. They lived all their wedded life in this community and he was away only while he served his country during World War I in 1917-1918. In June of 1948 he was received by confirmation into the membership of Union Creek Lutheran Church and was an active member there at the time of his death.

Mr. Ball was Widely known in this community as a friendly neighbor and as a salesman of livestock feeds. He loved baseball and kept close scrutiny of all activities in connection with that sport. 1972 was the first year-he was unable to hear and watch the World Series. He enjoyed the company of others and showed much interest in them.

Among those who survive his departure are: his wife, Harriett; his two sons, Richard Jr., of Citrus Heights, Calif., and James, of Akron; his daughter, Mrs. Sharon Van Wyhe, of Canton, S.D.; his ten grandchildren; his three brothers, Harry and Julius Ball, of Akron, and Adolph Busch of Vista, Calif.; his three sisters, Mrs. Kenneth Ludwig, Verga and Erma Busch, all of Akron. His sister, Freda Ball, preceded him in death in 1960.

The funeral service in his memory was held at Union Creek Lutheran Church, Tuesday afternoon of last week, November 7, with Pastor David J. Roy, officiating. Mrs. Henry Fickbohm, at the organ, accompanied Mr. William Bohlen as he. sang "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Honorary casket bearers were Clarence Andrews, Paul Erichsen, Julius Hultgren, Stanley Johnson, Alfred Kjose, Roy Ludwig and Chris Wilken. Acjive casket bearers were Pete Van Beek, Aller Berg, Melvin Andrews, Eldean Oaks, Herbert Swanson and Max Vreugdenhil. Interment was in Union Creek Church Cemetery.
