Bushgens, Charles, 90, Remsen Harnessmaker for 50 Years, Died.
The death of Charles Bushgens, 90, a harness maker in Remsen for more than 50 years, took place in Miami, Fla., on Aug. 11, the Remsen Bell-Enterprise reports.
Mr. Bushgens retired from business in 1940, following the death of his wife and had made his home since then with his son, Raymond, in Miami.
Born March 3, 1859, in Fremont county, New York state, he accompanied the family to Independence, Iowa, at an early age. As a young man of 27 years he came to Remsen and engaged in the harness trade which he pursued here through the early days of the community and steadily until his health prompted his retirement.
Shortly after his arrival in Remsen he married Augusta Schmidt in 1888. She passed away in 1940. Mr. Bushgens, with the help of his son Byron at the time, carried on in the harness store but ill health proved a burden and his son Raymond came to induce him to share his home in Miami.
Surviving are his daughter, Margaret Booth of Colorado Springs, and two sons, Byron of Milwaukee and Raymond of Miami. There are two brothers – Eugene Bushgens of Reno, Nev. and John Bushgens of Chicago. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Tuesday, Aug. 23, 1949
Note: Charles is likely buried in Florida. His wife and infant son are buried in the Remsen City Cemetery.
