Mrs. C. Bushgens Claimed By Death. Well Known Early Settler in Remsen.
Mrs. Charles Bushgens, 77, pioneer resident of Remsen, died Monday in the hospital at Cherokee.
Born May 22, 1863, in the village of Thuringen, Saxony, Angusta Schmidt was among nine children of John and Elizabeth Schmidt. Her father was a grammar school teacher in the old home. Augusta Schmidt came to the United States with her cousin, Mrs. Emil Sallach. The young women went directly to Niellsville, Wis., where they made their temporary home with a brother, John Schmidt.
Coming to Remsen she was married to Chas. Bushgens, pioneer harnessmaker and saddler in Remsen, the ceremony taking place in Le Mars April 12, 1889.
Surviving Mrs. Bushgens are her husband and children: Byron and Mrs. Margaret Rupp, Remsen, and Raymond, Winter Haven, Fla. A son Charles passed away in infancy in 1890. There are three grandchildren, Dorothy Rupp of Colorado Springs, Carl Rupp of Remsen and Connie Marie Bushgens of Winter Haven.
The funeral was held Wednesday at Christ Lutheran church, Remsen, Rev. A. C. Noack officiating, and interment made in the Remsen cemetery. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Friday, April 10, 1940, page 1.
Note: The spelling of her maiden name on the gravestone is “Schmitt”. In August of 1940, Augusta’s husband, Charles, moved to Florida with son Raymond and is probably buried there.
