SERVICES HELD IN DEADWOOD FOR DON FLETCHER

Mass of Christian Burial for Don O. Fletcher, 89, Deadwood, S.D., was held Tuesday, January 4, 1994, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deadwood, with the Rev. Paul Dahms officiating.

Christian Wake and Rosary services were held on Monday at 7:00 p.m. at the church with inurnment at a later time.

There was no visitation. Arrangements were under the direction of Chaput Funeral Home of Deadwood.

Don O. Fletcher died Wednesday, December 29, 1993, at Northern Hills General Hospital in Deadwood.

He was born August 5, 1904, at LeMars, Iowa, to Thomas and Ruth (King) Fletcher. He graduated from high school in Burke, S.D. In 1931, he came to Deadwood.

He owned and operated a shoe store for 35 years, selling the store in 1962. He then began working for the US Postal Service until his retirement in November of 1974.

He loved the outdoors, fishing and hunting.

He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge serving as Past Exalted Ruler and Past District Deputy of the Elks. During this time, he oversaw the Elks Crippled Children’s Clinic for 17 years.

He was also a member of the Deadwood City Council, chamber of commerce and the Days of ’76 Committee of which he designed the ’76 Committee Flags.

He was a Charter Member of the Tomahawk Country Club, Chairman of the Library Board when he redesigned the basement of the Deadwood library as a meeting room, later named the “Don Fletcher Room.”

Among survivors are his wife, Rosemarie of Deadwood; a daughter, Jean Fletcher, of Tustin, CA.; a son, Jim Fletcher, of Deadwood and Hot Springs, S.D.; one granddaughter, Natasha Fletcher, of Battle Mountain, NV; two sisters and one brother in Oregon and one brother in California. He was a cousin of Eunice Buryanek and the uncle of L. R. Norman, both of Burke, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
