Verle E. Barwick, 81, of Akron, died Monday, April 12,2004, at a Sioux City hospital, from complications of Parkinson's disease and pneumonia.

Services were Thursday, April 15 at the Wesley United Methodist Church at Akron, with full military honors provided by American Legion Post 186 of Akron and the U.S. Marine Corps courtesy of the Department of Defense. Cremation rites preceded the service.

Mr. Barwick was born on December 1,1922 at Clark, SD the secon son of Clarence and Mae (Hoffman) Barwick. He graduated from Grand Meadow High School in Cherokee County in 1942. In Dec.. 1942 he left home for Marine Corps basic training at San Diego, CA. After basic training Mr. Barwick spent the entire remainder of World War II in the Pacific Theater seeing action in many island campaigns and ultimately China, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1946. On July 19, 1947, he married Collen J. Herbold in Le Mars. They farmed in Cherokee for three years then moved to Pierson, he purchased half interest in the Carsten John Deere implement business. After selling his interest in the Pierson business, he purchased the John Deere franchise in Akron from Moir Implement Co. and started Barwick Implement Company serving Akron area farmers from 1958 until illness forced him to retire in early 2001.

Mr. Barwick is survived by his wife; one brother, Clarence J. Barwick of Cherokee; and four sons, Gene and Lori Barwick of Owatonna, MN, James Barwick of Edmond, OK, Jerry and Karen Barwick of Akron, and Gary and Cindy Barwick of Sheldon; eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister-in- law.
