Paul E. Gant, 44,3445 Virginia St, night captain of the Sioux City Police Department, died Monday afternoon at a Sioux City hospital after a four-month illness.

Capt. Gant was born June 28, 1926, at Westfield, Iowa. He went to Sioux City and joined the police force as a patrolman in 1950. He was promoted to sergeant August 1, 1957, and to lieutenant August 1, 1965. In 1964 he attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation training academy and was named training officer for the depart- ment. He was promoted to captain in 1969. He was a member of the Sioux City Policemen's Association, and for several years served as secretary-treasurer. He also was a member of the board of directors of the Iowa State Policemen's Association, a member of the Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police and Peace Officers, Tri-State Policemen's Association and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Capt. Gant married Maxine Eastman June 27, 1953, in Sioux City.

Survivors include the widow; a son Mark at home; a daughter Angela at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Gant of Akron, Iowa; two brothers, William of Ionia, Iowa, and Robert of Jefferson, S.D.; and three sisters, Mrs. Douglas Harrington of Laurel, Nebr., Mrs. Rubin Engle of Sioux City, and Mrs. Raymond Janosky of Donner Grove, Ill.
