Mrs. Emma C. Bender passed away very unexpectedly at the Scared Heart hospital Sunday May 3 at 10 p.m. after having only been admitted a few hours previously. Although she had been under a doctor’s care for the past month her death was no expected.
Mrs. Bender was born April 8, 1873 at Keystone, Iowa and lived in Le Mars for the past 52 years. She made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Esther Smith, city librarian, at 126 6th St. S.E.
Time of funeral services is awaiting arrival of members of the family. Services will be conducted by Rev. M. L. Straube at St. John’s United church in Le Mars. Remains will be at the Wiltgen-Luedtke funeral home here until time of services.

Survivors include her children: Henry Bender of Waterloo; Mrs. ?? Bender, dean of student affairs.. Cedar Falls, Iowa State Teacher’s College; Dr. Erwin T. Bender ?? Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Lawrence?? (Emily Jane) George of Washington D.C. Three sisters and four grandchildren also survive. – Le Mars Globe Post, May 4, 1959.

Bender Dedication Sunday. Next Sunday Sept. 27th at the 10:30 service a beautiful missal stand will be placed on the altar for the book of worship and dedicated in memory of Mrs. Emma Bender, formerly a pastor’s wife of St. John’s Church. The memorial is being presented by the Bender family who will be represented by Mrs. E. Smith, local librarian and other relatives living close enough to Le Mars to make the trip.
