Lester L. "Bud" Schulz, 83, of Merrill, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, at The Abbey of Le Mars.

Lester Leo Schulz was born Nov. 30, 1927 in Merrill, the son of LaVern and Pearl (Peterson) Schulz. He attended country school near his home on the family farm. After his education, Bud helped his family with farming.

On May 6, 1948, Lester and Gladys Plueger were united in marriage at Christ Lutheran Church (Grant Township), rural Le Mars. They made their home on a farm west of Merrill. On March 11, 1952, Bud was inducted into the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served his country as an aircraft engine mechanic prior to his honorable discharge March 10, 1954, having attained the rank of Corporal. Following the service, Bud and Gladys returned to the farm.
Upon their retirement they moved into Merrill and later Le Mars.

Bud attended Merrill First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Olson-Halweg American Legion Post 125 of Merrill.

While on the farm he enjoyed hunting. He and Gladys also spent their retirement winters in Texas. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Gladys at The Abbey of Le Mars; a sister Dorothy Warnock of Merrill; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Leonard and Dowayne; and a sister, Arlene Botsford.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The Rev. Merrill Mueller will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Merrill with military honors provided by Olson-Halweg American Legion Post 125. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present to greet friends from 6-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
