At the Sacred Heart hospital, Le mars, at half past eleven Tuesday morning, occurred the death of Peter Spiecker, a pioneer resident of the vicinity of Remsen. Mr. Spiecker was seventy years of age. His death was due to old age, but was hastened on by severe injuries caused by an accident at the home of his niece, Mrs. Herman Oehlerts, with whom he made his home for some time. On December 31, Mr. Spiecker, on account of a sudden sick spell, fell and fractured a hip, which sent him to the hospital, where he suffered and grew more feeble day by dy.
P{eter Spiecker was born on February 2, 1848, near Meldorf, Eaasch, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He came to the United States in 1869, and settled in Benton county, Iowa, where he was engaged at the blacksmith trade in a rural community for some time. His brother, Hans Peter Spiecker, who died some years ago, was at that time living in Benton county, and the subject of this sketch was a member of his brother’s household continually since he landed in this country.
Peter Spiecker has been staying with Mr. and Mrs. Oehlerts since May, 1915, at their present home, the old Hans Spiecker homestead west of Remsen. Besides his Remsen relatives, the children of his brother, he is survived by one brother, Christian Spiecker, this state and a sister Eisbe Todt, and three children of a deceased brother, John, namely, Frederich, Franz and Anna Spiecker, all residing in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The deceased lived in Plymouth county since 1882, and has hundreds of warm friends here who regret to hear of his passing.
Mr. Spiecker was highly esteemed and enjoyed the confidence of all who knew him. He was one of the first, and at the time of his death was a stockholder in the German Savings bank of Remsen, of which his nephew, Frank Spiecker, is cashier.
The funeral was held this afternoon with services at the Herman Oehlerts home west of town at two o’clock. The services were conducted by Rev. J. J. Vollmar, pastor of the German Lutheran church of Le Mars, and interment was made in the Remsen cemetery. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Friday, Feb 1, 1918, page 2.
