Mathilda "Tillie" Hanstein, 95, of Le Mars, IA, died on Tuesday, December 31, 1996, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars. Services were held on Saturday afternoon, January 4, 1997, at St. John Evangalical Lutheran Church in Craig, IA, the Reverend Ernest Caltvedt officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery at Craig, under the direction of the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Mrs. Hanstein was born on November 29, 1901, near Ireton, IA, the daughter of Henry and Alvina (Schulz) Baack. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, where she was a lifelong member, and was educated in a country school in Reading Township, Sioux County, IA. She married Grant Hanstein on December 15, 1920, in Reading Township, and the couple farmed east of Craig until retirement in 1956. Mr. Hanstein died June 25, 1971. Mrs. Hanstein continued to live on the farm until 1988, when she became a resident of Plymouth Manor Care Center.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Ronald and Marlene of Le Mars and Wendel and Jeanne of Lakewood, CO; a daughter-in-law, Catherine Hanstein of Denver, CO; a son-in-law, Jack McHale of Brunsville, I A; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two greatgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Edwin; a daughter, Marion McHale; and two brothers, William and Henry Baack. Pallbearers were Jack and Steve McHale; Gary, Ken, Duane, Mark, Bruce, Sieve, and Kent Hanstein; and Darwin Johnson.
