Richard J. Schmidt, 86, of Remsen, IA died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006 at the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen after an extended illness.
Richard J. Schmidt was born August 3, 1920 in rural Remsen, IA the son of John P. and Clara (Raveling) Schmidt. He was raised in the Remsen area and received his education at Remsen Public School from which he graduated in 1938. He was then engaged in farming with his father near Remsen. On Sept. 6, 1942 he entered the U.S. Army and served in New Guinea and the Southern Philippines during WWII being honorably discharged Dec. 9, 1945. He then returned home to continue farming and also had a shop on his farm where he built and repaired farm equipment.
Survivors include: One sister, Mariann and her husband Vance Harnack of Remsen; two nieces, Karen Harnack of Remsen, IA, Lu Ann and her husband Shawn Skatges of Sioux City, IA and their two children, Aaron and his wife Martha Skatges and their three daughters, Alyssa, Felisa and Kelsi, all of Dakota City, NE, and Krista and her husband Wyatt Lara of Louisville, KY; one nephew, Alan and his wife Melissa Harnack and their son Reece and daughter Peyton, all of Remsen.
He was preceded in death by his parents: One brother, Ervin; two grandnephews, both in infancy, Chase Harnack and a son of Aaron and Martha Skatges.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wed., Nov. 22, 2006 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Remsen with the Rev. Craig Miller officiating. Burial was in the Remsen City Cemetery. Visitation was after 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen with a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation was continued on Wed. at 9:00 a.m. in the church until service time.
Casket bearers were: Kenneth Kohler, Orville Portz, Dean and Joe Staab, and David and Gerald Waldschmitt. – Remsen Bell-Enterprise, Nov 23, 2006.
