Wm. Lang and wife and Chas Koerner went to Larchwood last Monday to attend the funeral of Ed Koerner, the twenty-two year old son of our former fellow townsman, W. W. Koerner. The young man drove from Larchwood in a single buggy to a farm on Monday, May 22d. On his way home it began to rain and he swung a blanket over his shoulders. The horse saw the swinging blanket and shied, jumping sideways. Ed was thrown from the vehicle and sustained a fracture of the left leg near the body and a dislocation of the hip bone. Horse and vehicle arrived home safely and a search began for the rider. He was found six hours after the accident and in an alarming condition. It had rained during all those hours and the unfortunate man suffered greatly. In spite of all the care and medical attention be received he breathed his last on Friday, May 26th. Decedent and his parents are well known in and around Remsen and the sympathies of the community are with the bereaved family. - Le mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, June 6, 1911, page 2.
