Aged Resident of Remsen Dead. Mrs. Elisa Mohning Died April 25. Mrs. Elisa Mohning, one of the oldest residents of Remsen, died Sunday, April 25, after a 12-day illness of bronchial pneumonia, at the advanced age of 94 years, 2 months and 20 days.
Eliza Jensen was born February 4, 1854, in Barmstadt, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johannes Jensen. She came to United States as a young girl and was married October 16, 1874, at Vinton, Iowa, to Jacob Holck, who died in 1909. They farmed south of Marcus, in Cherokee county, until 1901 when they retired and moved to Remsen. Mrs. Holck was married in July 1910 to Henry Mohning and they continued to live in Remsen until Mr. Mohning’s death in 1931. Mrs. Mohning had made her home recently with her daughter, Mrs. Henry Falke, in Remsen.
Mrs. Mohning is survived by seven children: John Holck of Byron, California; Mrs. Will (Alvina) Schmillen, Marcus; Mrs. Frank (Amelia) Schmillen, Marcus; Mrs. Will (Laura) Jorgenson, Luverne, Minnesota; Mrs. Katherine Mohning, Canby, Oregon; Mrs. Henry (Lizzie) Falke, Remsen; Mrs. Fred (Bertha) Deuth, Worthington, Minnesota; and two step children, Louis H. of Marion township and Marie Mohning, of Hemet, California. Three children died in infancy.
She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren, 14 step grandchildren and 17 great step grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Moeller Funeral Home and at 2 o’clock at St. Paul’s Evangelical church in Remsen, with Rev. Paul Wuebben officiating. Burial will be in Remsen cemetery.
The pallbearers will be sons-in-law: Frank and Will Schmillen, Henry Falke, Will Jorgenson, Fred Deuth and one grandson, Alfred Schmillen. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, April 27, 1948, page 1.
