IS FROZEN TO DEATH. FORMER REMSEN MAN IS CAUGHT IN TERRIBLE BLIZZARD. WAS GOING TO HIS HOMESTEAD. Searching Parties Out Looking For Him Found His Body Two Miles From Faith, S.D. – Horses Were Found Eight Miles From Town.
Carl Koch, a brother of Henry and Fred Koch, and a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koch, Sr., was frozen to death on a country road near the town of Faith, S.D., last week. A telegram to that effect reached here Tuesday morning, but detailed information was lacking.
Mr. Koch, who lives a number of miles from Faith, it was reported, had been missing and unheard of since January 30th. The telegram stated that searching parties were out looking for him and that they had discovered his team of horses eight miles from town, and his sled two miles from town. It seems that the telegram was prepared for transfer, but just before it was sent, a notation was added stating that the body of Carl Koch had been found, frozen.
Mr. Koch was an unmarried man and lived many miles from town. He had been in town on the day of his disappearance and was known to have left for home. A terrible blizzard was raging in that vicinity.
Carl Koch was born in the province of Holstein, Germany, in July 1878, and came to this country with his parents in 1888. The family settled near Remsen, where they resided ever since. Carl left Remsen about six years ago to take up a homestead, and three years ago took up a homestead near Faith, his home at the time of his death.
The funeral will be held at Faith, S.D. The Remsen relatives wished to have the body sent here, but reports from Faith were to the effect that owing to the severe storms of the last week railroad facilities were such that shipment was impossible for a least another week. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Feb. 13, 1917, page 1.
