REMSEN PIONEER IS CALLED. Mrs. Mary Koch Laid To Rest in Remsen Cemetery.
Mrs. Mary Koch, well known and highly respected resident of Remsen, passed away at the Sacred Heart hospital, Le Mars, on Tuesday afternoon of this week, after a prolonged sickness pertaining to infirmities of old age. She was 91 years old. Mrs. Koch is survived by one son, Peter Koch, and two brothers, namely, Hans and Detlef Ericksen [Erichsen], who reside in the Remsen community. She was preceded in death by her husband who passed away some years ago.
Mary Koch, nee Ericksen [Erichsen], was born in Akerbegi, Germany, in 1940. In 1863 she was united in marriage to Ernest Peter Koch. The couple resided in Benton county, where they settled on a farm, later moving to Plymouth county and took up a farm near here. After the death of her husband in 1907, Mrs. Koch moved to town, where she has made her residence, remaining here until a few months before her death. Prior to being taken to the hospital, Mrs. Koch had been making her home with her son, Peter Koch. Several weeks ago, Mrs. Koch had the misfortune of breaking her hip, and was taken to the hospital.
The deceased was one of the oldest residents of this community and enjoyed a wide acquaintance for many years. She was a life-long member of the Lutheran church and was a woman of strict Christian principles and admirable character. She was a devoted wife and mother and was loyal to her friends.
Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the home of the deceased’s son, Peter H. Koch, and immediately thereafter at Christ Lutheran church. – Le Mars Globe-Post, June 29, 1931, page 2.
