FOUGHT IN THREE WARS. The Late Earnest Koch Was in Many European Battles. Remsen Bell-Enterprise:
Ernest Peter Koch died at his home in Henry township on Thursday, January 10, at the age of 72 years having been born in Germany on the twelfth day of August, 1835. He served his fatherland, Prussia, honorably as a brave soldier in the war with Denmark in 1864 in the great war of 1866 and in the war with France in 1870 to 1871. In the great war that resulted in the United German Empire he was twice wounded. He spoke with pride of his career as a soldier and of honorable discharge. On the 12th day of August 1863 he led Marie Margaretha Erichson [Erichsen] to the altar, and this happy union was blessed with five children of which four died the widow and one son, Peter H. Koch, remaining to mourn the loss of the kindest husband and father. The remains were laid to rest in the Remsen cemetery last Sunday afternoon, after solemn funeral service at Christ church conducted by Rev. Baner, and attended by a large concourse of sympathizing friends and neighbors of the bereaved family. Peace to his ashes. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Jan. 22, 1907, page 5, column 5.
