Pioneer Dies in California. Peter Wagner Lived in County 63 Years. Death claimed another pioneer of Plymouth county when Peter G. Wagner, who left here three years ago, passed away last Thursday in the home of his son, George Wagner, in Long Beach, Calif. Mr. Wagner’s death was due to heart trouble and complications. He was 83 years old. Surviving are two sons, a daughter and four sisters. Burial was made in the Remsen cemetery Tuesday afternoon.
Mr. Wagner had been in failing health for seven months but was able to be up and about most of the time until one week prior to his death. During the final week his life was despaired of and he was fully aware that the end was at hand. Born on a farm in Dubuque county, Iowa, September 22, 1856, Mr. Wagner spent the first 20 years of his life at home with his parents, and in 1876 came to Plymouth county. For one year he worked on the farms of Philip Boever and Math. Wurth near Le Mars. Returning to Dubuque county for a brief period he came back here the following year and then spent four years at his old home and in 1881 he settled on a rented farm in Union township. After two years of bachelorhood he went to Dubuque and married Mary Rubie, a sister of the late Fred Rubie, prominent Remsen business man and town official. The couple settled on the Union township farm where they remained for nine years after which they bought a farm four miles northwest of Remsen in Fredonia township.
Mrs. Wagner died in 1919 and Mr. Wagner remained on the farm with his son, George, who took charge. He remained with his son until 1926 and then spent 10 years with his daughter, Mrs. Ernest Benjegerdes, after George left the farm. In September, 1936, Mr. Wagner went to Long beach to make his home with his son George, in whose home he received excellent care during his stay and especially during his final illness, and where he passed away.
Mr. and Mrs. Wagner were the parents of three children, all of whom remain to mourn their loss. They are: George, of Long Beach, Cecelia Benjegerdes and Edward, Le Mars, Five brothers preceded him in death. Surviving also are the following four sisters: Mrs. John Noel, Dubuque; Mrs. Elizabeth Tileson, Crawfordsville, Ind.; Mrs. W. W. Walker, San Jose, Calif., and Mrs. Wm Ehret, Emery, S.D.
