The Hans P. Schmidt home in Remsen was thrown into sorrow last Saturday evening when the wife and mother, who had been ailing for many years with Bright’s disease, passed away after a period of two weeks of unusually severe illness. Mrs. Schmidt was 63 years of age and a native of Switzerland. She is survived by her husband and three children. The body was laid to rest in the Remsen cemetery Tuesday afternoon following services in St. Paul’s church, conducted by Rev. E. H. Eilers.
Mrs. Hans P. Schmidt, whose maiden name was Maria Anna Aeschelmann, was born in the canton of Berne, Switzerland, on March 25, 1857, and came to the United States in 1868. Her first home in this country was Elgin, Ill., where she remained for eight years. In 1876 she came to Plymouth county for twelve years made her home with the Neuenschwander family.
On March 28, 1888, Maria Aeschelmann became the wife of Hans P. Schmidt, the marriage taking place in Remsen and the following year Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt moved to their own farm one mile north of Remsen. They resided there for twenty-six years, retiring and moving to town in the fall of 1916. Upon moving to Remsen they purchased a fine modern home in the north part of the city, which is still the family home.
For the past fourteen years Mrs. Schmidt had been a sufferer with Bright’s disease, and during that time all treatments and special care failed beyond temporary relief. It was not until two weeks prior to her death that her condition began to assume an alarming aspect, and during the last four days her death was expected. The end came to relieve a good woman of her heavy suffering at 8:15 o’clock Saturday evening, January 24.
The deceased is survived by her husband and three children. The children are John P. Schmidt, Fred Schmidt and Anna, now Mrs. Marius Bogh, all living in this community. There are three grandchildren.
The funeral service conducted by Rev. Eilers of St. Paul’s church, were held Tuesday afternoon, services being held in the Schmidt home at 1 o’clock, in the church at 1:30. The services were largely attended, the deceased being highly esteemed by all of her acquaintances. Burial was in the Remsen cemetery. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Jan. 30, 1920, page 1.
