This community lost another good man in the death of Rudolph Zangger, who passed away at the home of his mother-in-law in Berkley, California, last Friday, October 1st, following a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Zangger’s death came very suddenly and was a shock to the many friends and relatives in Remsen. He was ill for a number of y ears and went to California only a few weeks prior to his death in hopes of regaining his health. Rudolph Zangger was fifty years old at the time of his death. Rudolph Zangger was born October 3, 1965, in Switzerland, and came to the United States with his parents in 1878. The family first settled on a farm near Waukesha, Wisconsin, and lived there for five years. Then they moved to Elgin, Iowa, remaining there one year and came to a farm near Remsen in 1884. Seven years later they moved to California, where on March 29, 1893, Rudolph was married to Miss Catherine Bach, of San Francisco. The couple immediately came to Remsen and settled on a farm northeast of town where they remained for four years and returned to California. For fifteen months he was employed as a street car conductor and motorman in San Francisco and later they came back to Iowa, settling on a farm near Marcus, which is the present home of the family. Mr. Zangger suffered for some time with heart trouble and went back west in September of this year in hopes of gaining health and strength, and the end came suddenly at the home of his mother-in-law in Berkeley, California, on October 1. The body was shipped to Remsen for burial. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, October 12, 1915, page 2.
