Death of Nonagenarian
Hans J. Erichsen Was Well Known Farmer in Henry Township

Hans J. Erichsen, aged 90, died March 13, at the home of his son, William Erichsen, in Henry township. He enjoyed good health all his life and died suddenly.

He was taken sick when alone in the house while member of the family were attending the funeral of his granddaughter, LaVonne Klaschen.

Hans Erichsen was born in the village of Grumby, Schleswig, Germany, on May 12, 1842, a member of a farming family. He grew to young manhood under the parental roof and in 1866, at Lindaunis, in Schleswig, was united in marriage to Christinea Lorenzen. The couple continued to pursue the occupation of farming and in 1878 brought their family to the United States, settling on a farm in Benton county, Iowa. They farmed there for eight years and in 1886 moved to Remsen and rented a farm north of town, now known as the old Strohbeen farm. They operated this land for more than six years and then moved to another one south of Remsen, now the Peter Ott farm. In 1896 Mr. Erichsen bought the place in Henry township where he died.

Mrs. Erichsen died on Easter Sunday, April 3, 1904.

Surviving Mr. Erichsen are his son, William, of Henry township, one sister, Mrs. Mary Wullstein, Sioux Falls, and one brother, Detlef Erichsen, of Remsen. There are ten grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the home at 1 o’clock, followed by services in St. Paul’s Evangelical church in Remsen conducted by the Rev. Paul Wuebben. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, March 21, 1933, page 3.
