Le Mars Daily SentinelElmer Muecke, age 81, of Sheldon, died Sunday, May 15, 2011, at his home in Sheldon.
Elmer Oswald Muecke was born Nov. 5, 1929, in Hinton, the son of Oswald Herman Paul and Viola (Peters) Muecke. He lived his youth in Hinton, where he attended school and graduated from high school.
Elmer served in the United States Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of Corporal. He was stationed in Jacksonville, Fla., Memphis, Tenn., and Cherry Point, N.C., and was honorably discharged in 1954.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Elizabeth Bennett of Sioux City, Jan. 2, 1952, in Merrill, while Elmer was serving in the Marine Corps.
From 1954 to 1957, they farmed in Hinton. In 1957 they moved to Inglewood, Calif., where Elmer attended Northrop University and received his airplane mechanics license.In 1959 they moved back to Hinton, and in 1964, they moved to Sheldon.
Elmer owned M & B Flying Service with Merlin Bock for 30 years. He worked for Midwest Flying Service in Sheldon for 20 years.
In 2011, he was honored and received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award for 50 years of flying.
Elmer was a member of the Sky-Hi Flyers, the American Legion, the Masons, and Eagles Club. He was a member of the Shriners and Abu Bekr Flying Fez. He volunteered his time to fly children and adults to St. Jude's Hospital. He also served on the Sheldon Volunteer Fire Department for 10 years.
Elmer and Shirley enjoyed going on family vacations during the summer with the whole family. After their children grew up they enjoyed taking the grandchildren. He also enjoyed golfing and bowling.
Elmer will be remembered as very loving, caring, and giving person.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of 59 years, Shirley Muecke of Sheldon; two daughters, Pamela and Peter Klein of Rock Rapids, Sherri Morgan of Sheldon; one son: Duane and Amy Muecke of Sheldon; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Irene Ludwigs of Le Mars.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, George Ludwigs.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Sheldon, with the Rev. Marvin Lindley officiating.
Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery at rural Le Mars.
Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service in Sheldon.
Casketbearers will be grandsons, Jason Muecke, Charles Scobba, Andrew Oxford, Charles Ball, Jeffrey Ridenour and Daniel Ridenour.
