Marlo S. June, 78, of Le Mars, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Marlo Stanley June was born Jan. 30, 1933, in Pipestone, Minn., the son of Stanley Le Roy and Ruth May (Kemnitz) June. As an infant, Marlo and his family moved to Merrill, Iowa. He played on the basketball team and graduated from Merrill High School in 1951. Marlo enlisted in the United States Air Force on June 5, 1952. Marlo served as a radio operator and weather observer in Alaska during the Korean War. He earned his honorable discharge June 4, 1956.

After the war, Marlo continued his education at Morningside College in Sioux City, and later at South Dakota State University in Brookings. After college he began his career in the construction field.

On Aug. 6, 1960, Marlo and Janice Thompson were united in marriage at the Whitfield United Methodist Church in Sioux City.

Marlo's career in the construction field moved the family throughout the West and Midwest before returning to the Merrill area. He also worked part-time as a building inspector in Yankton, S.D., and Le Mars.

Marlo was a member of the Merrill First United Methodist Church. Throughout the years he served the Methodist Church in various capacities and on numerous committees. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star and Shriner's Clown Group.

In California, Marlo served with the Agency on Aging and as an ombudsman.

In Minnesota he was on a local Building and Planning Commission.

Locally, he volunteered as a Senior Companion.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years, Janice of Le Mars; a daughter, Karen (Joe) Boehmer of Coleridge, Neb., and their daughter, Danielle of Yankton, S.D.; a daughter, Sharyl (David) Elgin and their daughter, Kathryn all of California; sisters Donna (Merlin) Bock of Tracy, Minn., Doris (Ken) Myskins of Sheldon, Bev (Ray) Berens of Benson, Minn., and LaVon (Jack) Holton of Merrill; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Wilmer June.

A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at the Merrill First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Merrill Muller will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens at rural Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m., followed by Masonic Rites. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the service on Monday.
